A royal legacy anchored in the Strait of Malacca
Port Klang, November 2026. For the 36th time, Malaysia's west coast will serve as the playground for one of Asia's oldest regattas. From 13 to 21 November, the Raja Muda Selangor International Regatta (RMSIR) will launch its crews into a nine-day marathon combining offshore racing and coastal regattas — a format few events worldwide can claim.
Organized by the Royal Selangor Yacht Club (RSYC) in association with the Royal Ocean Racing Club (RORC), the RMSIR has been running since 1989. It owes its name and existence to Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah, then Raja Muda (Crown Prince) of Selangor. The original idea: intercept racing yachts heading north to the Phuket King's Cup in Thailand to create a Malaysian event capable of competing. The gamble has more than paid off — the regatta has become a cornerstone of the Asian calendar, the continent's second-oldest.
Nine days, four stops, zero respite
What sets the RMSIR apart from most international regattas is its hybrid format. There's no room for specialization here: crews must excel in both overnight offshore navigation and tactical coastal racing on short courses.
The route covers between 240 and 300 nautical miles and breaks down as follows:
- Port Klang → Pangkor Island — overnight race
- Pangkor → Penang — overnight race
- Harbour Races around Penang
- Penang → Langkawi — overnight race
- Final coastal races in Langkawi
Three long overnight passages. Three days of harbour racing. The switch is brutal: you need to manage sleep, current, accumulated fatigue, then instantly flip into tight buoy-racing mode. The Strait of Malacca gives no quarter — fickle winds, complex tidal streams, conditions that shift hour by hour. Versatility isn't an asset here, it's a survival requirement in the standings.
An eclectic fleet under IRC handicap
One of the RMSIR's charms lies in its fleet diversity. You'll find racing machines optimized for IRC rating alongside classic cruisers sometimes a century old. The spectacle is as much on the water as in the stopover marinas.
The blue-riband category remains IRC Class 1, the proving ground for professional and semi-professional crews. In 2025, for the 35th edition, The Next Factor — a Farr 40 skippered by Rolf Heemskerk — claimed the prestigious Raja Muda Cup by dominating Class 1. The presence of designs as sharp as the Farrs speaks volumes about the competition's technical level. The 2026 edition will inevitably see contenders attempting to dethrone the defending champion.

Far more than a regatta: the RMSIR experience
The event's social dimension is integral to its DNA. Prize-giving dinners punctuate the evenings at each stopover. And then there's the famous Rickshaw Race through the streets of Penang — a moment of collective release that bonds crews before the final on-water showdowns.
What's at stake in November 2026
For the syndicates entered, overall victory won't reward pure speed alone. The RMSIR honour roll reads like a certificate of multiple competencies: physical endurance, precision coastal navigation, crew management over duration, mental resilience against unpredictable conditions.
It's precisely this cocktail that draws international fleets to the Strait of Malacca each year. The RMSIR isn't a sprint regatta. It's a full-scale test, stretched over nine days, where every mistake comes at a price — and where each stopover offers a chance to reset.
