La Trinité-sur-Mer

Europe's largest spring regatta prepares for its 2026 edition

430 boats, 2,500 sailors, Quiberon Bay transforming into a giant chessboard each spring: the Spi Ouest-France Banque Populaire Grand Ouest has no equivalent in Europe for keelboats. From the precisely tuned J/80 to the offshore-bred Class40, from amateur skippers to world champions, this entire community gathers in La Trinité-sur-Mer for five days of pure intensity. The 2026 edition will run from Thursday, April 2 to Monday, April 6. And as every year, entries will fill up fast.

Registration: a race before the race

The portal opens on January 22, 2026, closing on March 26. Two months, not a day more. The quota of 430 boats demands flawless administrative discipline — popular classes like J/80 or IRC fill up first.

An incomplete file means refusal. A late file means a surcharge (expect +€60 on top of the 2025 base rate, which stood at around €255 for a J/80). Valid IRC or Osiris rating certificates, FFVoile competition licenses, insurance: everything must be ready before D-Day. Designating an administrative lead within the crew isn't a luxury — it's race management.

2025 results: the benchmarks to know

The presence of Tom Laperche, Franck Cammas or Gery Trentesaux in their respective classes says it all about the level. For an amateur crew targeting the podium, the Osiris classes or less media-exposed one-designs — First 31.7, Surprise — offer a far more favorable accessibility/competition ratio.

Choosing your class: one-design, IRC, Osiris or multihulls?

The category choice shapes the entire experience — competitors, scoring method, technical preparation.

  • One-designs (J/80, J/70, Grand Surprise, Sun Fast 30 OD, Mach 6.50): elapsed time scoring, identical boats. Here, fleet tactics and start quality make the difference.
  • IRC (crew, double/mixed): corrected time via TCC. Every second gained on rating counts, even when far behind the elapsed time leader. Minimum TCC of 0.850 in crew, 0.949 in doublehanded.
  • Osiris (groups C to R4): FFVoile corrected time, ideal for production boats. The light wind coefficient (CVL) doesn't apply at the Spi.
  • Multihulls (Multi 2000): heterogeneous fleet from 25 to 59 feet, managing high speeds and apparent wind.
  • Handivalide (Mini J, Hansa, Néo 495): dedicated circle since 2024, elapsed time, three-day format.

In IRC, the "Single Event Rating" (SER) option reduces costs for those racing only this event. Worth serious consideration.

Rules of the game: winning on the scoreboard

Racing takes place in Quiberon Bay, divided into 5 zones (A to E), on two course types: windward-leewards (maneuvers, close tactics) and coastal courses (currents, site effects, navigation).

A major modification to the Racing Rules of Sailing applies: the contact penalty drops from two turns (720°) to one turn (360°). When at fault, immediate atonement dramatically limits scoreboard damage.

Start penalties, however, are unforgiving:

  • OCS: mandatory return behind the line — have a practiced "dip start" procedure.
  • UFD (U flag): race disqualification, no atonement possible.
  • BFD (Black Flag): disqualification if present in the triangle in the minute before the start. In dense fleets, adopt a conservative line.

The discard system (dropped race) must be integrated into scoring strategy from day one.

Logistics: pitfalls to avoid

La Trinité-sur-Mer is maxed out. Every year, same story: those who book late sleep far away.

  • Marina berths: generally offered to competitors within a defined window. Outside that, paid mooring.
  • Crane service: not included, must be reserved and prepaid with the harbor master. No handling without prior payment.
  • Accommodation: book as soon as registration is confirmed in Carnac, Auray or neighboring towns.

An event rooted in history

Born in 1978 as "Spi d'Or," becoming "Spi Ouest-France" from 1979, the event has crossed decades without losing its DNA: accessible, demanding, festive.

  • 2020-2021: resilience through COVID with a fall postponement and a virtual edition that gathered 32,000 skippers.
  • 2022: light air edition, cruel reminder that a light sail inventory isn't optional.
  • 2024: creation of the Handivalide circle, major inclusive turning point.
  • 2025: introduction of the Sun Fast 30 One Design and the Laura Vergne Trophy in Figaro 3.

The partner ecosystem — Banque Populaire Grand Ouest as title sponsor since 1989, SNT on the sporting side, Ouest-France on media, plus Voiles & Voiliers, Garmin, Saint-James — guarantees multi-channel coverage and a Village du Spi animated by nearly 200 volunteers.
