Twenty-five years: the GPEN enters the history books

A quarter of a century that the Brest roadstead has pulsed to the rhythm of the Grand Prix de l'École Navale. From 13 to 17 May 2026, over the Ascension weekend, the event blows out its twenty-five candles with unwavering ambition: to remain France and Europe's premier one-design gathering. Close to 1,000 sailors, 200 boats, civilian crews mixed with French Navy personnel — the formula hasn't changed, but it's lost none of its punch.

Since its creation in 2001, the GPEN has charted its course without deviation:

  • 2001 — Birth of the event, championed by the École navale.
  • 2010 — The Fédération Française de Voile entrusts it with the label of French One-Design Keelboat Championship (CFMH).
  • 2026 — 25th edition, proof that the marriage between military and civilian sailing goes the distance.

Camaret, base camp for the Figaro 3s

While the GPEN typically spreads across five sites on the Crozon peninsula — Brest, Crozon-Morgat, Roscanvel, Camaret and the École navale — the Figaro 3 class has dropped anchor specifically at Camaret for this edition. Start and finish at the same port, in a loop that promises spectacular racing off the Atlantic.

Strict one-design, zero material excuses

The principle is crystal clear: rigorously identical boats, no technological advantage. Only tactical sense, course reading and crew cohesion count. Since 2009, the FFVoile has delegated the organisation of the French Championship to the GPEN, turning each race into a direct showdown for the title of French One-Design Keelboat Champion.

A fleet like no other

It's the GPEN's signature: no other event in France mixes civilian and military crews on this scale. On one side, seasoned amateurs and offshore professionals. On the other, petty officers, officer cadets, active-duty sailors who swap the deck of a frigate for that of a one-design.

This mix isn't a PR stunt. It produces tight racing, where reflexes honed in operations clash with the instincts of battle-hardened racers. The French Navy's image gains visibility, civilians gain rigour — and everyone tacks together.

Mid-May in Brittany: wind and current

Sailing off Camaret in mid-May means accepting a demanding playground. The area is wide open to the ocean, the currents are muscular, and Breton weather gives no quarter at this time of year. The 2025 edition, held in late May, already confirmed the need for flawless physical and strategic preparation to tackle conditions at the Finistère headland.

The most experienced crews know it: here, reading tidal streams can be worth as much as a good start.

Solid territorial roots

The GPEN is more than a regatta. It's an economic engine for the Crozon peninsula and a showcase for Brittany.

The organisation also relies on a network of volunteers whose dedication is praised every year by competitors. It's this well-oiled machine — blending military rigour and volunteer passion — that has allowed the event to hold its ground for a quarter of a century.

What to remember

Twenty-five editions, and the GPEN remains true to its DNA: demanding competition, a unique crucible between civilian and military worlds, and a Breton playing field that forgives nothing. For the Figaro 3 class, the Camaret appointment will be one of the highlights of the 2026 season.
