Final Rehearsal Before the Open Ocean
Fifty-two miles around Antigua, three days before the starting cannon of the Caribbean 600: the Antigua 360 is no mere coastal race. It's the full-scale crash test for crews committed to the RORC Caribbean season. Scheduled for Friday, February 20, 2026, this island circumnavigation closes out the RORC Nelson's Cup Series (4th edition, February 17–20) and awards the series' final trophy.
Organized jointly by the Royal Ocean Racing Club and the Antigua Yacht Club, it draws an international fleet estimated at 35 boats representing 16 nations—from Maxis to Class40s, including MOCRA multihulls.
For team managers, this is the moment of truth: validate sail settings, test crew cohesion, identify final friction points before the endurance of 600 miles.
A Tricky 52-Mile Course
The course traces an anti-clockwise loop around Antigua, with the start off Fort Charlotte. The route includes rounding "Mark A" at Three Fathom Bank (17°11.50'N / 61°42.70'W). On paper, 52 miles can be wrapped up in a few hours. In reality, the West coast changes everything.
The Leeward Coast Trap
The island's elevated terrain generates zones of flat calm extending up to 2 nautical miles offshore. This is where strategies diverge radically:
- IRC monohulls: hug the coast to minimize distance, accepting the risk of crossing windless pockets
- MOCRA multihulls: favor a longer route offshore to maintain consistent airflow—a complete stop on a multi being far more costly in corrected time
This strategic differential forms the tactical heart of the race. Choose the wrong option and it could cost you a podium spot.
Weather: Classic Trades, Treacherous Swell
February conditions follow the winter trade wind pattern, but with specific risk factors.
- Prevailing wind: East to East-North-East, around 14 knots—mostly reaching and close-hauled sailing
- Average swell: 2.4 meters, period of 10.4 seconds—a long, powerful swell demanding precision at the helm
- Major risk: "North Swells," capable of making upwind legs particularly grueling, combined with localized squalls
Manageable conditions on paper, but ones that reward pure speed and punish every steering error.
Rules and Ratings: What You Need to Know
The race is governed by the Racing Rules of Sailing 2025-2028 and the RYA Racing Charter.
Eligible Classes
- IRC: minimum TCC of 0.950
- MOCRA: minimum rating 1.100, minimum LOA 9.15 m (30 feet)
- CSA and Class40: admitted subject to sufficient entries
Key Modification: Rule 41(c)
Competitors may receive weather and current information freely available to all. However, any personalized routing or boat-specific tactical advice from an external source is strictly prohibited. A nuance worth understanding clearly by every crew.
Simplified Penalties
The standard two-turns penalty is replaced by a single-turn penalty for infringements of Part 2 of the RRS. Protests must be filed via the digital portal within 2 hours of finishing.
Safety: Offshore Standards for a Coastal Format
Despite its sprint format, the Antigua 360 applies offshore-level requirements:
- World Sailing OSR Category 3, with mandatory Category 2 liferaft
- 30% minimum crew (at least 2 persons, skipper included) must hold a sea survival certificate less than 5 years old
- EPIRB and AIS mandatory on board
- Emergency contact: ABSAR (Antigua Barbuda Search & Rescue)—VHF channel 16, tel. +1 268 562 1234
Tracking and Communication: Total Autonomy
Major point of attention: Yellowbrick (YB) tracking is mandatory, but each boat must supply and install its own device. The organization does not provide it—a notable difference from other RORC events.
Live tracking is accessible via the YB Races app. Notice of race and results are distributed through the SailRaceHQ platform.
Fleet and Competition Level
The lineup promises to be strong with confirmed presence from circuit references:
- Leopard 3 (Farr 100): the Maxi is the monohull Line Honours benchmark
- Rán (Carkeek 52): winner of the overall IRC corrected time classification in the previous edition, setting the performance standard for mid-size boats

Antigua 360 vs Caribbean 600: Two Philosophies
| Antigua 360 | Caribbean 600 | |
|---|---|---|
| Distance | 52 nm | 600 nm |

One prepares for the other. Lessons learned off Antigua's West coast could make the difference three days later in the Guadeloupe Channel.
Environment
The event targets Gold certification from the Clean Regattas program (Sailors for the Sea). Mandatory selective sorting on board, formal prohibition against anchoring on coral and seagrass beds. ABYMA is currently conducting an economic impact study to quantify the race week's contribution to the local economy—accommodation, restaurants, marine technical services.
