Nelson's Chase, 2026 Edition
19 September 2026, English Harbour, Antigua. A lone boat hoists the French ensign and sets off first. Behind it, a pack awaits its turn, ready to pounce on its prey. This isn't 1805, but the Annual Pursuit Race replays every year Admiral Villeneuve's pursuit by Lord Nelson across the Atlantic — the prelude to Trafalgar.
Conceived by Stan Pearson and organised by the Antigua Yacht Club, this race is no ordinary regatta. It's a rare blend of historical re-enactment, IRC handicap strategy, and charitable commitment benefiting St. John Hospice. All condensed into a fifteen-mile loop around the southern tip of Antigua.
A Format That Breaks the Mould
Forget massed starts and compensated time calculations at the finish. Here, the handicap is settled before the starting gun.
Staggered Starts, Grouped Finish
The principle is crystal clear: the slowest boat according to its IRC rating starts first, flying the French tricolour. She represents the French fleet. Faster boats then set off at precise intervals, each attempting to catch those ahead. The organisers' theoretical objective: to see the entire fleet cross the finish line at the same moment.
- First to start is the boat with the lowest rating
- Maxis and Superyachts sometimes leave more than an hour later, forced into aggressive sailing to make up the deficit
- Victory hinges on the ability to maintain — or exceed — your rating's target speed
This format generates unique psychological tension. Leading crews watch the silhouettes of faster machines loom ever larger in their wake. A game of patience, precision and nerve.
The Course: Tactical Loop Beneath Antigua's Forts
The classic route circles the island's southern point, linking different points of sail to test each boat on its strengths and weaknesses.
- Start from English Harbour, beneath Fort Charlotte
- Nelson Mark: a reaching leg a few miles offshore
- Villeneuve Mark: run down towards Carlisle Bay
- Return upwind to English Harbour for the finish
15 to 20 nautical miles of racing. Enough to open gaps — or close them in a bunched finale.
September, an Unusual Slot
The 2026 edition breaks with the usual calendar, often tied to New Year's Eve festivities. In September, we're in the heart of hurricane season. The winter trades of 25 knots and the formed seas of December give way to more uncertain conditions. Winds generally remain steady, but weather vigilance will be essential for competitors.
A Fleet That Mirrors the Caribbean
It's one of this race's charms: you'll find everything, from traditional Carriacou sloops to 72-foot carbon racing machines.
- Traditional sloops like Sweetheart Mon Amour (36 feet, built in Carriacou) — often start first and prove formidable in light air
- Maxi Yachts such as Balthazar (Mills 72) — start with a heavy time handicap and must maintain high speeds to challenge for the podium
- Superyachts like Gloria, a 150-foot schooner — majestic dimensions, critical water-space management
- Cruiser-racers of 40 to 50 feet — the heart of the fleet, local and international boats mixed together
Recent history has proved the system's effectiveness: in certain editions, more than a quarter of the fleet has crossed the line within two minutes. And in 2015, symbolically, a French yacht took the honours — reversing the 1805 script.

Beyond Racing: A Community Pillar
The Annual Pursuit Race doesn't exist solely for the results sheet. All proceeds go to St. John Hospice, which provides essential palliative care in Antigua. In past editions, the event has raised nearly EC$10,000 — with organisers encouraging donations beyond simple entry fees.
Rum and Camaraderie
Prize-giving, traditionally held at the Admiral's Inn or Antigua Yacht Club, celebrates performance and the spirit of fellowship in equal measure. Trophies come with local rum. Professionals and amateurs exchange views on racing strategy and naval history, in an atmosphere regulars describe as the "Spirit of the Regatta."
